Song

I just listened to this song by the Irish group Dervish. I love the lyrics. The music is haunting. It’s the perfect fairy tale. I love the practicality that this woman deals with sickness, loneliness, and death of a loved one,
“If he’s sick, I will wish him better
If he’s dead, I will wish him rest
But if he’s alive, I will wait upon him.”

I’m not sure I’d have such aplomb.

There was a maid in her father’s garden by Dervish

There was a maid in her father’s garden
And a gentleman, he came passing by
He stood awhile to gaze upon her
And he said, “Fair maid, would you fancy I?”

“But I’m not a lady, I’m a poor girl
A poor man’s daughter of low degree
Therefore, young man, find some other sweetheart
For your servant maid I’m not fit to be

It’s seven years since I had a true love
Seven more since I did him see
And seven more I will wait upon him
But if he’s alive, he’ll come back to me

If he’s sick, I will wish him better
If he’s dead, I will wish him rest
But if he’s alive, I will wait upon him
He’s the only young man I do love best”

“It’s seven years since you had a true love
Seven more since you did him see
And seven more you will wait upon him
Perhaps that young man you ne’er will see”

He put a hand down in his pocket
His gentle fingers, they were thin and small
And up between them he pulled a gold ring
And when she saw it, she down did fall

He picked her up all in his arms
And gave her kisses most tenderly
Saying, “I’m your true love and single sailor
Who came o’er the sea for to wed with thee”

“If you’re my true love and single sailor
Your gentle features, they look strange to me
But seven years makes great alterations
O’er the raging seas between you and me”

There was a maid in her father’s garden
And a gentleman, he came passing by
He stood awhile to gaze upon her
And he said, “Fair maid, would you fancy I?”

Early rising

Sometimes I think about going exercising early in the morning.

This morning reminds me why I don’t.

I got up really early to work on my review paper (5am). My oldest joined me at 5:45am. She is currently watching Zoboomafoo. Most of my friends 5 yo kids sleep until 8am. Not mine. Especially, when the girls were infants, they were more likely to wake and want to nurse between 4-6am. So walking on our creaky floor boards was detrimental for my sleep.

That’s why I always rejected the idea of morning exercise. I just can’t sneak past the kids without waking them up early and robbing Wayne of sleep.

Sara and Laura both like listening to my headphones (which I’m using to concentrate in the office). Last night they were playing on the Bella Sara web site (site where you feed and care for horses) while I tried to wax poetic about diabetic neuropathic cachexia. Sara tried her hand at dancing to Enya while listening to the headphones.

Leavenworth-Tired

Found house 3pm. Unpacked. Fed 4 kids snacks. Bathroomed. Suited up again. Rented snowshoes from der sportsman. Saw some neat sleds.

Leavenworth-Beginning

We’re off to Leavenworh. We were ready to leave around 10am. We joined jon and claire to watch the twins while they finished getting ready. I had to walk back since I’d forgotten the second set of subaru keys. By the time I got back, we were ready to go.

We’ve just finished at Kidd valley in bothell. It’s a nice stop. We got a little farther in our trip and had a yummy lunch. Nice burger and sweet potatoe fries. The twins polished off a shake.

Packing is always stressful for me. It’s something that takes concentration. That’s something that’s hard to achieve with kids. Pack. Kids need snack. Get back onto track. Scream. Mediate fight. What was I doing? Remember something I left upstairs. Run upstais. Notice that the clothes I’ve gathered have been used as a leaf pile for jumping and fashion show. Sigh. Regather clothes. Phone rings. Talk. More screams. Toys I’ve gathered have been scattered. Try snow gloves. Do they still fit? Child runs away from me when I want to do a fasion show. Will the charoit sled fit in the subaru. But we did a little at a time and did get packed. I just always stress unnecessarily. The dreaded ” what if we forget something” isn’t the end of the world I imagine it to be.

Obama orders Gitmo closed.

One of the aspects I reviled the most about “He who shalt not ever be named again” was Gitmo. Now Obama has ordered it closed on day 2…

I am now glad I voted for him.

Swim

MLK day. This is not a complete holiday for me. The kids are home. I forgot I would have kids home and my housecleaner coming that day. So I decided to take kids swimming. They have been talking about swimming all week. I knew we wouldn’t have time later in the week. So we went.

Laura and Sara had a blast. It’s interesting to see how they play. Sara loves being with me. Pre-Laura, all our games centered around me as the playmate. Today, Laura didn’t want to have much to do with me. I got some laughs when I bounced out of the water and made glugging noises. I was entertaining for jumping. My attempts to get her to ride on my back like a horse were met with a tepid response. I tried to pull her in the water and her hand went limp. Sara, on the other hand, wanted to ride on my back while I dove. She wanted to be with me all the time. She’s gotten interested in taking off her PFD lately. I tried to bring a noodle, but it didn’t stay on very well. Today, she jumped off the edge while standing on her feet. Normally she wants to be on her bottom when she is on the edge. I’ve been trying to pull her out further and them support her while she swims back to the steps. She also demonstrated swimming with her knees straight which she learned in swim class. It’s hard to explain to kick from hips without bending knees.

The house feels nice right now. As Erica said,”we’re finally settling in from the holidays.” I have meals cooked with leftovers, I’m a little ahead on this weeks laundry, the dishes are done. I know it won’t stay like that for long, but I’ll enjoy the feeling.

Laughter

It’s good to reconnect with my husband. Everyday, Wayne shows me he loves me. Sometimes it’s nice just to hang out and be alone with him. It reminds me why I married him. We didn’t talk about anything important, but we talked together. We tried new foods at How to Cook a Wolf. It’s becoming a favorite of ours. Wayne has already declared it his favorite restaurant. We actually had to wait awhile and were “forced” to try the new Teacup location (taken over from Tully’s). The seats were comfortable. We geeked over iPhones for a while.

Wolf was great. First we negotiated. We balanced this with that. Then we enjoyed the parade of tastes that were nicely timed across our counter. The service is always attentive and friendly. I got a cherry coke made from real cherry juice. The foccacia was nice. The combo of olives in the olive oil didn’t ruin the oil for me as it has in the past. It just added a nice tang. We had buffalo mozzarrella w/ fennel and green apples. I expected to combine the mozzarella with the foccacia, but didn’t need to. The scallops were amazing. I used the bread to wipe the dish clean. The wild boar ravioli had a nice taste. The meat stood by itself, but still melted into the ravioli without being subsumed by it. We were at the bar making people/cook watching optimal. We tried the pear sorbet at the end.

At one point, I was talking about a thought I had of a golden field of grass in the wind. Wayne started making a whooshing sound (like the wind). I teased him that it sounded like a wind from the Badlands instead of a soft summer day like I imagined. This exchange made us laugh uproariously. It doesn’t translate well in the written word, but I’m glad I married Wayne. It’s good to laugh together.

Puppy games

Sara and Laura have been playing puppy. Laura is the puppy and Sara is the Mom. At this moment, Sara is opening a banana for her “puppy” and serving her milk for breakfast. The puppy listens and obeys her sister-mom more than her real Mom.

Our ornaments are still sitting in an open box downstairs waiting to be put away. Sara went by and picked up a reindeer ornament and made up a reindeer song. Laura didn’t see this. When she went by the box, she picked up the same ornament and sang a song. I only understood the word reindeer.

Playmates

Wayne has playmates here in the form of 16 yr olds. One of them found an old game, Shadow of the Collasus, that Wayne had passed onto the boys after not getting past the 2nd of 14 monsters. Matthew was almost finished (translation of almost = 10 monsters conquered, but 18 hrs of playing time left). The graphics are stunningly beautiful with a majestic horse as a main character. This and the absence of gore attracted the entire family at intervals to watch. We worked our way thru feasting with monsters being killed at intervals. Spare ribs, deer steak, black eyed peas, sweet potatoes.

Welcome 2009

Doug is about to leave for a long drive to Arizona. I’m waiting to say goodbye and pondering the new year. The wall steet journal had an article about new years resolutions from famous people. I agreed most with martha stewart interestingly. She said that resolutions were contracts to be modified and changed as needed. I feel like I have enough things held over from 2008 to keep me busy. I’m looking forward to adventures in 2009.
