Glacier Bay

Filed under: General — Wayne @ 7:10 pm

After flying from Juneau to Gustavus in a little Cesna, we took a boat tour of Glacier Bay. I have not had time to go through the hundreds of photos, but the trip was one of those lucky days.

Below is a shot of the Margerie glacier just as a very large section calved off and fell into the bay. Even the tour guides were impressed at the size of this and we could easily feel the waves generated as they spread from the foot of the glacier towards the boat.

The picture gives no reference for scale at all. It just looks like some ice falling into the water. However this wall of ice is truely massive. This link effectively demonstrates the scale.

Humpbacks

Filed under: General — Wayne @ 8:39 pm

We just returned from a wonderful trip to Alaska. Out near Glacier bay, the humpbacks were frolicking about with their young. We took a boat trip out to watch them play.

The picture below was taken at a fairly high ISO at about 450mm. The boat was rocking a good bit, so not as clear as I would like, but overall not bad.

After his mom called him in from playing, another adult dove right near the boat and gave me the perfect opportunity to get a rather nice fluke shot off.
