Bagels and Locks

Filed under: General — Wayne @ 7:11 pm

Last weekend we had a wonderful walk to the Ballard Locks. The weather was a little strange. One moment we would have pouring rain and it would be cold and windy. We kept walking and 5 minutes later it was bright, sunny, and warm.

When we got to the locks, Sara wanted a snack and enjoyed eating her bagel by the rose gardens. (Thanks Claire for the great photo!)

Then we walked over the locks and to the Dam, Sara was scared by the loud noise of the water, so her Nana took her to the other side to play. Meanwhile I got to try out my new 300 zoom lense. It was nice to be able to get closeups of the salmon fry as they flew through the dam sluice on their way to become big fishies that eventually end up in my belly!

However certain denziens of the locks didn’t really want to wait for these guys to grow up. A kingfisher was having a wonderful buffet day, he would just fly around and munch on these guys as they came out of the dam all dazed and confused.

We walked through another heavy rainstorm on our way back home, and stopped at “The Scoop” to get ice cream. Sara really loves cookie dough ice cream (just like her mom)!

All done!

Filed under: General — Wayne @ 7:38 pm

Sunday evening. Six day before oral boards. Dad’s second day on the Colorado in the Grand Canyon. Day #5 of Mom’s visit. We’re tired. We agree with Sara in this picture. This is Sara’s sign for “all done”. We’re ‘all done’ right now.

Sara had her 18 mo appointment. Can you believe that she’s actually 1.5 yrs old? She looks so big and she used to be so small. Her doctor’s appointment didn’t go as smoothly as I’d like it. Sara’s head circumference has grown beyond normal growth curves for 3 times in a row. That’s enough to worry about hydrocephalus (increased fluid in the brain). So we’re off to get a head CT at Children’s Hospital to make sure there’s not danger. I suspect Sara is just growing a big head like her Dad. I got surprised when I called for the appointment and they decided she needed general anesthesia! I was unhappy with that and am going to try to get the test without sevoflurane.

Poor Sara! She just got over her diaper rash and her nose starts leaking snot. One week later, it’s getting worse, she’s burning hot, and the snot is green. Off to the doctor again. Amoxicillin for her secondary bacterial infection.

Wednesday morning, I wake up from a nap as Sara cries awakening from her nap. I smell smoke. I hear Wayne arriving home from picking up Mom. I hear our nanny arrive. I have 20 min to eat lunch and get to work. I leave for work to fire trucks arriving for the smoldering fire in our water heater. By the time I arrived home, we had a new water heater.

Energized by being husband extraordinaire, Wayne decided this weekend was the time to replace our hall light fixture. Saturday, he brought home a beautiful fixture from Home Depot. Sunday, as I’m frantically trying to finish studying, Wayne decides it to install on our vaulted hall ceiling. Mom is watching Sara, playing on the deck. Wayne obviously needs help supporting the ladder. I growl a little under my breath, resentful of the loss of study time. I still prioritize Wayne’s safety. So, I sit under the ladder, holding it steady during this difficult project. Not a good position. Just at the crux of the project, a set of pliers falls from Wayne’s hand and slashes me in the nose. Blood everywhere. Off to the Swedish Ballard ER. 1.5 hrs later I have a laceration superglued and steristripped and have met 5 members of the ER staff.

Now for the good part of the weekend…dinner. A lacerated nose a week before my oral boards in worth lots of yummies. Wayne and I wandered over to the Hi Life, sat at the stools looking over the kitchen, ate oven roasted pizza (sopressata and pancetta/carmelized onions), and ending on chocolate cake and cheesecake.

Good food continued this week with some from Mom and some from us. Mom made us spaghetti and meatballs w/homemade sauce. Raisin oatmeal walnut fresh muffins this morning.

Thursday evening was Claire’s birthday. Wayne and I cooked together and made a Rachel Ray 30min meal. With 2 people, it took about 45min for veal scalloppine rolls with smoked mozzarella, roasted red peppers and parsley, then wrapped in pancetta and panfried; gravy made w/ spinach; prosciutto cream sauce ziti al forno; and vanilla ice cream with pears and chocolate sauce. Yummmm! It also felt good to make such a delicious meal in partnership with Wayne. I’ve missed cooking together as much as we used to before Sara was born.

Finally, Saturday morning was delayed Mother’s day. Wayne watched Sara. I took Mom to our athletic club for hour long massages. Next was brunch at Moose Cafe, a delightful brunch joint opened by Kathy, a woman whose life and family is in Mexico, but came her to care for her elderly father. She opened this brunch place with Mexican themed food. I had thick slices of French toast w/ vanilla cinnamon syrup. Then we wandered around downtown Ballard, soaking in the sunshine, walking past the new library (sod roof) that opened that day, and checking out a local bookstore. When we got home, Wayne got the afternoon to go shopping for light fixtures and new telephotos lens and flash. We ended the evening with an intriguing series (sci fi-space opera/western from Josh Whedon), Firefly, which is due out in movie form this summer?

Phew! Actually, we’re not as tired as we’d expect for all the events of this week. Still, Wayne is snoring next to me and I can hear Sara breathing in the monitor. Time for me to sign off. Here’s a photo of me with my bandaged nose and our new light fixture.

House Fire Averted

Filed under: General — Wayne @ 7:26 pm

A narrow miss for the Wooten household today. I had just returned from picking up Karen’s mom from the airport, and met Karen in the garage, only to be met by the distinctive smell of burning plastic in the basement.

I sniffed around for a bit, thinking most likely given my luck with consumer electronics, that it was the nearly new HDTV that had blown a transformer or some such. However the TV seemed to work just fine. Then I remembered we had a fairly large electric hot water heater under the stairs in the basement. Sure enough the smell seemed to be from there, but I could not isolate it.

Since a house less than a block from us had just burned down, I looked up Seattle fire department on Google. I called the number closest to my house. “I smell burning wires,” I said. The nice woman said, “Hang up and call 911 right now”. So I called 911, kind of with trepidation. Anyway the fire folks came in under 2 minutes. Very impressive.

They looked around, and sure enough were somewhat concerned. Then the nice fireman put his hand on the hot water heater and noticed it was hot… “It shouldn’t be hot, the hot part is behind the insulation”. Another firman broke out his handy leatherman tool and riped off a panel. Pretty obvious where the fire was once he did that!

Turns out our 22 year old hot water heater had sprung a leak at the TOP. And it was dripping down into the control circuits and thermostat. It shorted them out, and the breaker only “HALF” blew. So it proceeded to catch the insulation on fire. Oh and the poor guy who’s house burned down… the LED display in his DVD player shorted and gutted the whole house at 5am. (The nice firemen who helped me were first on the scene of that one).

In the picture below, you can see some of the blackened insulation at the top of the panel (the back of the panel was all blackened/burned as well).

In the closeup, you can see the plastic on the thermostat had started to bubble and can see some of the burnt insulation there as well.

So they turn off the breaker and leave. Now I have to find a hot water heater and FAST. I once again turned to man’s best friend and entered “hot water heater” . A link for Home Depot comes up, and I call the 1-800 #. Fortunately I just made it under the “If you call before 1:30pm we will deliver and install a new water heater the same day” deadline.

An hour later Dave from Fast Water Heater shows up with a brand new water heater. He was an artist. He pulled the old one out– FULL of water! He installed a new one, with flex pipes and an emergency shutoff valve, he also put in earthquake straps. He did this all in about an hour and a half. This guy can solder copper pipe about as fast as any human alive. Almost worth the ridiculous amount of money I paid just to watch this guy work. The masterpiece is shown below.

2nd Mother’s Day

Filed under: General — Karen @ 3:14 pm

I knew something was different. The clock said 7am, no 5:45am. I had slept late! Wayne was not beside me. I heard rustling in the house below. I promptly snuggled into my covers and went back to sleep like a good mother. After a thirty minute snooze, there was a thump on the door. Sara and Wayne tumbled in the door with a tray of delectables: white chocolate cherry swirled bread, toasted w/ butter; peeled orange slices; cold milk; and a calla lily across the tray. Well done, Dad! Sara and Wayne joined me in the bed and we watched CBS Sunday morning enjoying an article about Mom’s finding new careers w/ motherhood.

Spring Dogwoods

Filed under: General — Wayne @ 8:02 pm

Well we have been busy. We managed to miss posting a single entry in April. Amazing what chasing after an 18 month old toddler can do to your free time. A quick synopsis of April.

Karen’s mom visited for the first half of the month to help watch Sara while Karen did an intensive medical board review course.

During that time we went to visit Tracy and Ty up in the Skagit Valley, but it rained so hard that we did not even get a chance to see any tulips at the festival.

Then we took a nice 4 day trip to Atlatna. I gave a talk about, “The Incredibles” and RenderMan at Georgia Tech and then we spent the rest of the time with friends and family. Sara really liked her cousin Justin, who would play hide and seek with her and chase her around Grandpa’s house.

We also got to have a nice large get together with my side of the family. My cousin Kirk and his mom and dad came to visit. We got to run around in the front yard with Sara and play catch and had so much BBQ we nearly burst. We also got to visit my great aunt Helen, who passed away shortly after we returned to Seattle.

Some pictures of Sara for the fans back home are below.
