7 Year Itch

Filed under: General — Karen @ 9:16 pm

Seven years and one beautiful daughter later, we are married and loving it. I just read about new research showing that people making it past 7 years are at a much lower likelihood to divorce. If there’s an itch, I haven’t noticed one. I’m married to my best friend and the love of my life. In fact, he’s the hand that scratches my back in that hard to reach place. I’ve watched Wayne instantly transform into wonder Dad with Sara’s birth.

Today was one of those days that makes you happy to live in Seattle. The mountains were in sharp focus, the water was blue and dotted with sailboats, and the temps floated into lovely, breezy 80’s. After coming home from a long day at work, we ordered Pete’s Pizza (the last of a generous gift for take out food given to us by Pixar at Sara’s birth). Wayne hoisted Sara into her new Kelty baby carrier and we walked to Sunset Park. Sara was smiling and glowing, enjoying the view from Daddy’s shoulders. It was a delightful moment looking at her and her Daddy having such a good time. We are dreaming of future camping and hiking (we also bought a new tent).

Wayne brought me a beautiful bouquet of flowers and Neuhaus Belgian chocolates (mmmm!). Saturday, I treated him to a surprise date. We tried out a local new restaurant in Ballard, La Carta de Oaxaca. What a treat! Mexican food with flare and authenticity; beautiful, provocative b&w photos of Mexico on the walls; tamale with pork in a mole sauce wrapped in a banana leaf; yellow curry empanada; and carne asada with a hot sauce.

Last weekend, we enjoyed a date sampling Hellboy. Interesting concept. I’m generally a fan of comic book movies (even the really bad ones-Daredevil and even the Hulk). Hellboy had all the elements, cool story, eccentric characters, good graphics, earth needing to be saved, neat one liners, and evil Nazi villains. Somehow, these elements did not come together as I expected. It seemed to lack spirit, though it tried very hard. Regretfully, it’s not a movie I can recommend.

Sunday 4/19 we visited old friends at Whidbey. Jane Cummings returned to Whidbey after a season of travel joined by Eric and Laura. Three red headed, blue eyed girls greeted us at the door. Alice and James accompanied on the ferry. We might have seen whales in the distance. We watched eagles catching fish in the Sound. I felt Gordon’s spirit that day. I miss him, but it was healing to be in a place he loved.

Bad colds!

Filed under: General — Wayne @ 8:45 pm

Well Sara came down with a cold about a week ago. She now seems to be fairly healthy, but she has given her parent’s a cold that just won’t go away. Both our throats and ears hurt, we cough all night and our sinuses feel like they will explode. I guess this is just the first of many. Maybe we will be better before we take our weekend trip to Mount Rainier.

A couple of pictures for those who love pics of Sara.

Mountaineers’ Photography

Filed under: General — Wayne @ 9:02 pm

We attended a really nice seminar given by the Mountaineers here in Seattle. The talk was by Tom Till. He is a really nice, soft-spoken photographer who schleps around a 4×5 land camera all over the world. He gave a very nice slide show, talked about his inspiration, the joys and trials of 4×5 photography, and how Bush is destroying the southwest faster than you can say “Canyonlands”.

It was only when he flashed one of his pictures up that Karen and I turned to one another and said, “Isn’t that hanging on our dining room wall?” We had no idea this was the guy who shot such a wonderful photo of Canyonlands, but now we do.
