Sara’s birthday party began the joy and chaos that is birthday week. Since the girl’s birthdays are so close together, we try to make a big deal on their birthdays. Traditionally, their birthdays have been together. This was the year of the SPLIT. Wayne declared that 5 and 10yo are “special” markers. So Laura got to chose a venue for her birthday. Sara at 5 took friends to the zoo. Sara was a sport.

She agreed to have her party be at home. In return, I let her invite a generous amount of friends. She also got different perks like balloons, flowers, and more complex food.

As custom, we invited families. Specifically, our community. The people we love (to borrow Amir’s terminology). We have no family here. So we have found our family here. Birthdays are a time to embrace the chaos and have those people surround us. Surround us they did. We had 30+ people and kids swirling around our house.
I was very impressed with the cake. Midnight chocolate ganache with mint ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery. I gave them free rein asking simply for a horse. I thought they did a spectacular job. I relented and got another one for Laura’s party the next week, though originally, I had insisted cupcakes were easier.
