20110815 Maligne Canyon

0800 awake

0930 head to Jasper. Eat at Papa George’s for breakfast with parents. They did right by us. Nice pancakes and oatmeal, fresh squeezed oj, and good hot chocolate.

Stopped at the Jaspar Info Center to officiate Sara and Laura to be Junior Naturalists of Canada. We finished their work books over breakfast. They got necklaces and got sworn in.

Noon. We got to Maligne Canyon. Maligne means evil and a French missionary dubbed thus Canyon such when he tried to cross it.

It’s a beautiful canyon and series of falls. The canyon gies surprisingly deep. Definitely a trail to watch the kids given the dropoffs. The river forms cuvettes, or rounded pools cut into the canyon wall.

The girls hiked up to stories of dragons and dwarfs and golden whistles. I started to lose my voice, so Wayne took over.

We didnt leave till 3pm. The girls all napped in the car. Wayne had a shower at the campsite.

We cooked a pancake breakfast for my parents. The picnic table finally dried from the morning’s rain.

Dad took Laura on mushroom hunt. Sara discovered friends, double Chloe’s and we went to the other side of the campground and played.

Wayne made our first fire. It cost $10 for a permit. We made s’mores. Bed early to tear down camp. The night is very cold.
