Rubbertime

One of my favorite things about being at home is that time can expand. Rubbertime. When I studied Southeast Asian history and culture in college, we learned about rubbertime in tropical countries like Indonesia, where time can expand or be flexible.

Within a day, there are things to do. But there is room for them to be done here or there. There’s not set parameters. Personality-wise, I get a lot of joy operating this way. Laura, also, does much better when there is no rushing. On mornings, we have to go, she balks. Today, there was rubbertime.

Tonight, after picking Sara from school, we hung out with a Mom with two little girls. The girls colored and played. Time stood still and I got to have the rarest of maternal treats, an adult conversation. We approached dinner hour, I had errands, but time still stood still. It was great.

After that, we headed to dinner. We found a home at Shiku’s happy hour. Sushi, edamame, gyoza. Sooo good. Fed, we got Sara her baseball helmet and headed home. We nestled together for story time. With new library books, everything seemed fresh and exciting and we were all eager to open new books. Highlights and lowlights was especially profitable with lots of snuggling. Laura participated (which is rare). Overall, I’m very happy for the rubbertime of today.
