Adult birthdays take effort, practice, and observation. When you’re a kid, there are obvious signs like parties, lots of gifts, and cake. Just like seeing where God is working in your life, birthday joy takes observation.
Situation- full day of work. 3rd day of cold. Tired.
Facebook- I love Facebooks’s birthday machine. I don’t have to remind anyone it’s my birthday. Facebook advertises for me. It’s fun and gratifying to see birthday wishes flow in.
Childlike enthusiasm- each age is different, but Sara has enough enthusiasm for both of us (and I love birthdays). At 6, she knows fully the meaning of birthdays.
She made me a beautiful card 2 wks before the day and then hid it so I wouldn’t see it. She almost forgot to give it to me. She kept asking me how many days were there till my birthday.
On the actual day, she came in to the kitchen and asked me when I was going to die. I was a little slow to answer that one.
Sara was also very loving this weekend during the weekend making me cards and artwork and praying for my health at night.
Evening- Pagliacci pizza. Chocolate covered strawberries. Land of the Lost. Nothing like sleestaks on your birthday.
Tilth- we went to this restaurant the day before my birthday, Super Bowl Sunday, which was super. This organic, well recommended restaurant is a house in a corner of Wallingford. Our table was also in a cozy, candlelit corner with no close neighbors adding to the romance. Our server was a Mom I got to know at Sara’s first school. We caught up on kindergarten news and then she became the perfect knowledgeable, yet unobtrusive server.
She pointed me toward a great homemade apple ginger soda. It was light, effervescent, sweet and blessedly cold on my sore throat. We made our own courses.
Thousand island, lettuce salad with crispy shallots and bacon.
Smoke heirloom bean cassoulet with mushrooms and black truffle oil.
Mini-duck burgers.
Veal stew.
3 cheese artisanal cheese- amazing.
Theo chocolate ganache cake.
Wayne had a 15 yr port.
Needless to day…this was amazing, adventurous, satisfying.
Sibling- David’s family called me with a rousing birthday song. Lindy cried along.
Parents-mom sent me a card super on time. I saved it to open on the day.
Friend- Claire put the girls to bed and came over to enjoy strawberries and give me homemade fingerless gloves.
