Blake Island

Sand fleas jumping. Laura playing with shells while pretending to be a lion. The day is cold and windy. We have no shelter, but we have no rain. I can see the sun and am thankful. I can relate to the saying “the devils in the details”.

I was excited about this chance to get to know more faces. It’s happening. I’ve increased my acquaintances by 5. I love how I keep forgetting to add Sara’s class and teacher to my introductions. It makes intros really long. “I’m Karen, there’s my husband Wayne, and my daughters Sara and Laura, 2 and 5. Sara’s in kindergarten in Ms. X’s room. How about you?” But that’s part of my school mantra now.

We wandered up and down the beach. Wayne followed one kid and I followed the other. It was very cold, but sunny and beautiful. Some kids made an elaborate fort from driftwood with an amazing amount of school spirit and cooperation.

Sara found a new best friend, Caitlyn. She had to go everywhere Caitlyn went and got to experience a larger level of independence than I normally give her when we’re not on a deserted 5 mile island with no roads or access other than boat.
