Memorial Day Hike

Well we finally got a chance to hike today. The weather forecast was for cold and rainy, so we quickly got our hiking boots, camera and pack and jumped in the car. (It was clear and 70 the whole time we were hiking).

We drove up I-90 past Snoqualmie pass, and got off at exit 62. We then drove down this dirt road for about 6 miles and came to a very pretty lake called, “Lost Lake”. At this point we started seeing snow in the trees. Then we passed a nice water fall, turned a corner and ran right into a big ol’ pile of snow covering the whole road. I tried to get our Subaru through it, but it fell off to the right side into a ditch and proceeded to scratch the paint down the whole right side of the car — let’s just say scratching paint with

I managed to get out of the ditch — I think Karen was having flashbacks to another episode where I ran off the road in the truck, but I won’t go into details here. Just after we got “unstuck” a bunch of young guys in jacked-up Toyota 4×4′s come roaring through the snow, but obviously their rigs were much more ready for the terrain than ours.

We then parked and proceeded to hike to our trail head. We figured it was only a mile away and down a fairly decent road. Well this trail was definitely well snowed-in. Just 1/4 mile down the road the whole thing was covered in DEEP snow for a couple hundred yards or so. The 4×4 guys didn’t even come close to getting through this stuff.

Another couple parked near where we did and they had a very friendly Golden Retriever puppy. He was happy to be in the snow and rolled around and ran through it with glee. We eventually made it to the trail-head. It wasn’t an easy hike however, the sun was hot, there was little shade on the snow and it was quite steep. When we finally made it to the trail, it was very snowed in. So much so that about 1/4mile in we couldn’t even find the trail anymore. We found a nice rock over a snow-melt stream had lunch, took pictures, and then had a nice hike back. Overall it was a wonderful day and we learned a few things. I need some new sunglasses, we are both out of shape, and I need a new camera bag (fortunately the nice D100 was NOT dropped in the snow).
